The second major order of reefers by Pacific Fruit Express, over 6,600 cars were delivered
between 1909-13. The new design may be thought of as an R-30-1/2 house (see kit series
1800) sitting on an B-50-6 Bettendorf single I-beam underframe. 500 R-30-4`s were delivered in
1909 with standard roof hatches. The R-30-5 was already designed by this time and 3,021 of
that class followed shortly. They differed from the -4 only in the use of Bohn ventilators. The
R-30-6 was delivered after the Safety Appliances Act and so had extra grab irons. It also
differed from the -5 in having more modern door appliances. The R-30-4 and -5 were quickly
upgraded with safety appliances in the `teens. The result of all this is that there are 5 physically
different cars representing the 3 classes. We model each one with a separate kit with decal that
carry the cars up into the 1920`s.
