The United States Railway Administration took over the railroads in December 1917 in an
attempt to ease the freight car shortage. As part of the program it designed standard cars,
had them built and assigned them to the various railroads. 24,500 double sheathed cars
were built beginning in late 1918 and assigned to 25 roads. Too late to aid in the war effort,
the design set a standard for the following decade. Our kit features a one piece car body.
Northwestern Pacific received 100 cars built by Standard Steel in 1919. As delivered they
were lettered in the standard Harriman style, retained until 1946 when the entire roadname
was stenciled on the side. In 1939 cars were equipped for express service and painted green
with gold lettering. In the 1950's remaining cars were painted in the SP billboard style with
the NWP herald. The kit models 1946 and later styles with AB brakes.
