Standard freight car designs were developed to ease the car shortage. 25,000 single
sheathed cars were built between 1918 and 1920 and assigned to 26 roads. Too late for the
war, they served as a standard for a decade. All USRA SS kits now contain one piece body
castings and both K and AB brakes.
PRR received 9,900 cars for itself and GR&I, LIRR and NYP&N. The cars were classed as
X26. Four lettering styles were used on the PRR cars as built; the decal set gives all of
them. Beginning in 1934 many of the cars were rebuilt with steel doors and Hutchins roofs.
Class X28 auto cars were converted to X28A box cars in 1934-5, yielding thousands of
surplus Creco and Youngstown auxiliary door. These were cut and welded together to form
full size door for the X26. New Youngstown and Creco doors were also specified, along with
home-made vertically braceddoors and original wood doors patched with steel plate on the
bottom.
