Standard freight car designs were developed to ease the car shortage. 25,000 single sheathed cars were built between 1918 and 1920 and assigned to 26 roads. Too late for the war, they served as a standard for a decade. All USRA SS kits now contain one piece body castings and both K and AB brakes. Ann Arbor received 150 cars from USRA and purchased another 50 from Government Equipment Trust. Delivered with the AA lettering of the period, they were repainted beginning in 1929 in the Wabash style. The cars were rebuilt in the 1940's with AB brakes and ran into the 1960's.
