The United States Railway Administration took over the railroads in December 1917.
Standard freight car designs were developed to ease the car shortage. 25,000 single
sheathed cars were built between 1918 and 1920 and assigned to 26 roads. Too late for the
war, they served as a standard for a decade. All USRA SS kits now contain one piece body
castings and both K and AB brakes.
Norfolk & Western received 800 cars from Pullman in March 1919, class BK, series 120000.
As built the car lettering uses the style of the previous 20 years: white rectangle and a myriad
of fonts and sizes. Lettering was revised to a more logical style in 1923 and updated in
the early 1930's. About this time the USRA cars were rebuilt with radial roofs. They ran into
the mid-1950's. Our kit covers the car up to rebuilding. Kit 3365 covers the rebuilt cars.
