The United States Railway Administration took over the railroads in December 1917.
Standard freight car designs were developed to ease the car shortage. 25,000 single
sheathed cars were built between 1918 and 1920 and assigned to 26 roads. Too late for the
war, they served as a standard for a decade. All USRA SS kits now contain one piece body
castings and both K and AB brakes.
Delaware & Hudson received 500 cars in 1920 built by Bettendorf. These were GET cars
(see kit
3301) the government sued D&H to accept. D&H repainted the cars in the modern style in
1926
and renumbered them in 1930. The cars were rebuilt in 1937 and ran into the late 1960's.
the kit
covers the car up to rebuilding but with some 'bashing will reach to scrapping.
