PRR designed the first quad hopper in 1909 for coke service, the class H21. It had clamshell
hoppers and 50-ton trucks. Beginning in 1913 70-ton trucks were applied, creating the H21A
class. Over 35,000 cars were built for PRR and the mines it serviced by 1917. Many lasted into
the Penn-Central era.

The top chord was found to be the car`s weak point and was strengthened in 1922. All H21`s
were converted to H21A`s in the 1920`s. Beginning in 1926 sawtooth hoppers replaced the
clamshells, but the latter still could be seen in the 1940`s. Kit 3201 covers all lettering to 1930;
3202 into the 1940`s.
