The United States Railway Administration confiscated the railroads in December 1917. It
produced standard freight car designs to ease the freight car shortage. The steel box car
design was never built but NYC used the design throughout the 1920`s as their basic design.
21,000 cars were built for NYC and subsidiaries between 1922-28 with evolving design changes
built in.
Cincinnati Northern received 400 cars with corrugated doors in 1926 from AC&F. A builder's
photo survives to give us the somewhat unusual lettering style. All but 90 of the cars were
transferred to other reporting marks in the mid-1930's but the remainder hung on well into the
1940's, the last car reaching 1950. Details and decals cover the life of the car. One piece car
body casting.
