So successful were the Pennsylvania GL hoppers that Pressed Steel Car Co. offered a generic
version to the trade in 1899. It was 18" shorter than the GL and used different door lock
mechanism. Thousands of these cars were sold through 1904 and ran for 40 to 50 years.
NYC began upgrading its cars with safety appliances in the early 'teens. At the same time,
LS&MS cars were transferred to NYC and renumbered to series 400000-400999. P&LE and
PMcK&Y series remained unchanged. While most cars were phased out by the mid-1920's, the
1904 delivery lasted to 1935.
