The Harriman standard 40` box car was designed for all the roads Harriman controlled in the
early 1900`s. One of the first steel underframe designs, almost 19,000 were built between 1904
and 1909. UP and IC cars were rebuilt in the 1920`s with steel ends; many SP and UP cars
wound up in MOW service.
The UP and subsidiaries kit feature the B-50-1/2/4 with UP, OR&N, OSL and SPLA&SL decals.
Post-safety appliance cars are modeled by the 1710 series. Beginning in 1924 most of the cars
were given steel ends; see the 1750 series. Unlike previous versions of this kit, only the
pre-safety appliance version of 1905-`teens is modeled. However, the option to model the
B-50-1 with truss rod ends has been added. Therefore, some photos show safety appliance
cars, now in 1710-series kits.
