The Harriman standard 40` box car was designed for all the roads Harriman controlled in the
early 1900`s. One of the first steel underframe designs, almost 19,000 were built between 1904
and 1909. UP and IC cars were rebuilt in the 1920`s with steel ends; many SP and UP cars
wound up in MOW service.
The SP and subsidiaries kit features the B-50-1/2/4 with SP, ML&T, LW, IV and GH&SA
decals for the Sunset Route herald. CP, H&TC and O&C each have separate kits, as each had
a different herald. Unlike previous versions of this kit, only the pre-safety appliance version of
1904-`teens is modeled. However, the option to model the B-50-1 with truss rod ends has been
added. Therefore, some photos show safety appliance cars, now in 1710-series kits. Modernized
cars are the subject of our 1751 kit.
