ERAS: 10s 20s STOCK_CAR MODELS: cars built 1910 and running to safety appliances in the 1920s. ROADS: AT&SF ATSF Santa Fe ordered 6,000 Caswell stock/dump cars between 1906 and 1924 in six classes, each of which differed slightly from the others. The Sk.H had wire side doors and 35-ton arch bar trucks. The Sk.K had 40-ton trucks. The Sk.L had slatted doors and some steel framing and single truss Andrews trucks. The Sk.N had safety appliances, a different roof, a car number letter board and double truss Andrews trucks. The Sk.P had wider side sheathing and two more letter boards. The Sk.H/K/L cars received safety appliances in the late 'teens and early 'twenties. The Sk.H received solid floors in the 1920s. In 1935 1,000 Sk.Ks were rebuilt with solid floors, steel framing and flexible metal roofs. Other classes that were shopped at this time received steel framing. Many had their outdise sheathing removed. However, some cars retained their original construction into the 1950s. In 1942-3 approximately 230 Sk.L/N/Ps were rebuilt with solid floors, X-braced doors, AB brakes and radial roofs taken from Bx-11/12 box cars. Some cars ran into the 1960s.
