MODELS: cars built 1901-1908 and running
to safety appliances 1919-20.
ROADS: MK&T WF&S M-K-T

MK&T purchased 2,150 35' 7" coal gons in 1901-1904 from American Car & Foundry and
Pullman, series 23100-25374. In 1907 it purchased replacements for destroyed cars from
AC&F, some of which were placed in earlier series of 29' cars. All car were letered for MK&T
but some had an EX after the reporting marks, presumably for the Texas Extension. In
1908-9 the Wichita Falls & Southern subsidiary ordered 40 cars. The 1908 lettering was
identical to MK&T but the 1909 had billboard reporting marks. All of the cars had six truss
rods on the underbody and two truss roods on each end. The 1901 and 1904 cars had a grab
iron on the top of the side at the A end; later deliveries had a board running across the top of
that end, identical to the one on the B end of all cars. All but one replacement delivery had
buffer blocks above the coupler; AC&F lot 4958 had steel buffers.

The cars were rebuilt with safety appliances and steel center sills in 1919-20 and relettered to
M-K-T in 1924. Although most cars were scrapped by 1935, a few ran into 1952.

Kit 10601 models all versions of the as-built cars for MK&T and WF&S up to 1919-20. The
kit consists of a body casting of sides and top floor, into which the ends nest. A lead-filled
bottom floor is separately attached and gives the model weight for running empty. With
the addition of a few grab irons and M-K-T decals the cars can be modeled throughout their
lives. We currently have no data on how the cars looked in this later period.
